Have you ever wanted to have those amazing gold foil canvas prints, but didn’t want to pay the price or maybe you liked the effect but you didn’t quite like the saying? Well, wait no more, I have the solution for you! You can make your own quick and easy DIY gold foil canvas sign with your own saying in your chosen lettering. Granted, this doesn’t use actual gold foil but the effect is very close. You can even choose rose gold, silver, bronze etc.
Supplies
- Gold Embossing Powder (Ranger Gold Super Fine Detail)
- Canvas
- Pencil
- Heat or Embossing Tool/Gun
- Small paint brush
- Printer
- Damp cloth
Instructions
Reverse Print
Print out your saying for your DIY Gold Foil on your printer and then scan it back into your computer (using your printer) and save it as a JPEG. Then open the Paint program and flip it horizontally, save and print again. Make sure you save it as a portrait, unless you want the landscape version instead.
2. Tape and Transfer
The next step follows the same principles as if you were using wood, as you can view in my DIY Wood Sign tutorial, “The Easiest Way to Transfer Lettering to Wood“. Tape down your printed reverse sign onto the canvas. Take a damp cloth and hold it over the lettering until you see the ink transferring. Be careful not to move the paper.
3. Tracing with Pencil
Once you see the outline then you can finish tracing the outline with a pencil.
4. Versa Marker
Now you are ready to use the Versa Marker. One side is a brush tip and the other is a fine tip. If you are familiar with how to use a brush marker, you can start your outlining. The key is to press harder on the down strokes so that part is thicker and lighter pressure on the upstroke so you get a thinner line. Or you could just use the fine tip to fill in the lettering.
5. Embossing Powder
The Versa Marker stays wet for a while so you have a good amount of play time. Then you want to take the embossing powder and liberally spread it over the lettering and then tap off your canvas onto a piece of paper to collect the excess. If there are spots you don’t want to get gold foil embossed then brush those off lightly with a small paint brush.
6. Heat Tool
Then take your heat tool or embossing tool and gently warm it over one part at a time until you see the transformation of the gold foil and then continue to move it along as you see it setting. *use caution when using a heat tool or embossing tool as it can start your canvas on fire if place to close so follow the instructions.
7. Touch Ups
If you need more gold embossing in one or more spots, you just use the Versa Marker one those spots, add the embossing powder, shake the excess off and use the heat tool on those spots again.
