It is the season for flowers, gardening and starting fresh. It certainly makes me feel alive and full of joy to be outside, hearing the birds singing, the sun shining and the flowers starting to bloom. And I love bringing the outdoors in when it comes to blooms and greenery. I have always loved succulents (thinking back to the hens and chicks in my mother’s garden brings a smile to my face) but some of them come with a hefty price tag. Then I remembered the May issue of Home & Gardens “Make It Yourself” Magazine with their DIY craft “no sew” succulent tutorial. I love sewing, but there’s no sewing here and I love felt, so I got excited to begin my “Not Sew Succulent” home decor arrangement.
Due to copyright requirements, I will not be posting a step by step tutorial on each succulent design but I will give some helpful tips and tell you where to find the tutorial. The Make It Yourself Magazine offers a pattern for each succulent but I will give you two links to two DIY projects, one from the designer of this project, Lia Griffith at liagriffith.com in her felt section found HERE and one from the online magazine HERE.
Supplies
- Felt in 6 varying colours of your choosing
- glue gun
- wood box, tin container or terra cotta pot
- floral foam block
- foam cutter
- artificial moss (I used real moss as I have a grand supply of it lol)
- florists wire
1. Floral Foam
Cut the foam to fit your container. Glue foam into container. I used a Twinings Tea tin in bright pink. Cover the top of the foam with moss and hot glue to sides of container.
2. Leaves
Cut out the leaves/pieces for each succulent. Glue them together according to the instructions you have. I made my own and used a few paper ones from Michaels as well.
3. Floral Wire
Wrap the florists wire (cut about a 5″ piece for each piece) around the bottom of each piece
4. Arrange
Once you know the way you would like to arrange the succulents then you can poke them through the moss and into the foam.
This “Not Sew Succulent” arrangement was fun and easy. I added a gold frame with one of my hand lettered prints, “Create Beauty” (available in the FREE PRINTABLES gallery page), which compliment the gold in the tin.
I love how these pieces all come together beautifully! Don’t forget to use what you already have in your home to create beauty.
