Bring on the summer weather! Face it, summer is a time of year when our makeup regime becomes more minimal and basic. We still want to look good but we don’t want the hassle of adding more minutes to our daily regime that might just slide off of our faces once we spend some time in the hot sun. I will give you an easy peasy list of the five basic areas covering my favorites that will help you get your summer Glow on in less than 10 minutes.
1. Skincare
Once you know your skin type, I would recommend following a regime that compliments your skin. Makeup does not perform optimally when the skin is not properly taken care of. Regardless of skin type or age, you need to exfoliate regularly to slough off the dead skin (that sheds naturally every 28 days and longer once you start into your late 30s and 40s). I highly recommend a product by O.R.G. called Mineral Peel Face in 2oz once or twice a week. I’ll let you in on a little secret, you can use the body exfoliator, Mineral Peel Body in 8oz on your face too as it is a larger bottle for less money.
2. Base – Sunscreen/Primer/Foundation
The best sunscreen that I have ever used is Jane Iredale’s Powder Me SPF Dry Sunscreen.
This product is a powder, it is dry!! It is SPF 30 and water resistant for up to 40 minutes in moving water. You don’t have to wait 30 minutes until it absorbs into your skin before going out into the sun as it doesn’t absorb but instead just sits on the skin. There are no harsh chemicals in it as well. It comes in a jar like container with a sponge on top. There is also a mirror on top of the outside of the jar. You can put it all over your face, in your hair part, and all over your body. If you do use it all over your face, you won’t be able to apply cream products over top. You could use it last in your makeup regime as a setting powder if your moisturizer, primer or foundation do not have sunscreen in them. It comes in three colours; translucent, tan and golden. It is such an amazing product.
Primer
Don’t skip the primer as this will help your makeup not to slip around during a hot or humid day. I have recently discovered The Ordinary Brand primers (now at Sephora). The original one is great for all skin types. It has a blurring and smoothing effect to the skin. They are a fraction of the cost for 30 ml of product compared to Smashbox and deliver the same (if not better) results. And they are made in Canada!
And here is the description of the age smart sister to the silicone primer straight from Victoria Health Website based out of the UK. “The High-Spreadability Fluid Primer: This new generation of primer is a lightweight serum-like formula that increases the spreadability of subsequent complexion makeup to help avoid the unnatural and uneven accumulation of pigments especially around the eyes and on dry skin. The formula also acts as a light, non-oily surface hydrator for a natural dewy look.” Check out their amazing skincare lineup of serums, retinols and direct acids (lactic, hyaluronic, salicylic, glycolic, AHA, BHA).
Foundation
For foundation, the lightest finish would be a tinted moisturizer. Jane Iredale has one with an SPF that has minimal coverage but can also act as a makeup primer or base. It is called Dream Tint. Warm Bronze is a great summertime pick.
My favorite for a light to medium coverage is Jane Iredale Pure Pressed Foundation. This is a great option for those with oily or combination skin. It is truly four products in one: sunscreen (SPF 20), foundation, concealer (great for going right under the eye with a concealer brush thus avoiding further cream products around the eye) and setting powder. Pure Pressed Foundation and Amazing Base have earned The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation.
The only additional product needed is a setting spray to adhere the foundation to the skin. Yes, it is necessary to have the staying power all day. The three setting sprays available are; Balance, D2O and Pommist, (which is good for all skin types). Also, see the last link for the setting spray in the starter kit.
2. Eyes – Eye Primer/Base, Shadow, Liner, Mascara
For the summer, I try to stick to an eye base or primer and one shadow. I use Elf Smudge Pot Cream Eyeshadow in Ain’t That Sweet in the jar form…
A third option with a shimmer is Elf’s Aqua Beauty Molten Liquid Eyeshadow in Rose Gold or Brushed Copper. Make sure to let the eye base set before opening your eyes fully to avoid an unwanted crease. These primers will help your eyeshadow stay and not slide around or collect in your crease. All of these Elf products are just as good as the high end colour pigment prime pots from the likes of MAC and even Chanel.
Eyeshadow
Then I use a sheer wash of a bronze colour of eyeshadow from Essence Bronze Palette (available at Loblaws, Shoppers Drug Mart).
If I want to go a step further, I will use my bronzer from Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer in Murumuru (see #3 below) in my eye crease.
Liner
Skip the liquid liner and the heavy cream liners for summer but opt for a waterproof liner that you can apply in between the lashes (otherwise known as tight line, not to be mistaken with your waterline). I love Joe Fresh 8 Hr Waterproof Kohl Eyeliner in Burgundy (available at Loblaws, Superstore, and some Shoppers Durg Marts) as it compliments my green eyes. You could use purples but they are not a warm enough colour to compliment your summer glow. So if you have blue eyes opt for a brown and if you have brown eyes opt for a deep blue. And if you have hazel eyes you can go for the more reddish toned browns.

Mascara
I am loving Loreal’s Voluminous Lash Paradise new mascara for summer (found at any drugstore locations). It comes in two shades of black and a waterproof one as well. The brush is so lush and thick and yet it doesn’t end up on my eyelids. I have heard it’s a dupe for Too Faced Better than Sex Mascara. I personally don’t find it necessary to use a waterproof mascara but I have very little for lashes and maybe that’s why I can get away with not using a waterproof formula.
3. Bronzer
I have fallen in love with Physicians formula Butter Bronzer in Murumuru for an all over sun kissed glow (available at all drugstores where Physicians Formula is sold). I had been following Kathleen Lights on Youtube for great products and tips and tricks. She raves about this bronzer so I just had to snag it. And the best part – it smells amazing!
You can see one of her videos, Kathleenlights October 2016 Favorites using it here. Apply along the cheekbone with a blush brush not below the cheekbone as you would a contour. If you have a high forehead, you can apply it along your hairline. To warm the face up more you can apply it to the centre of the forehead and down the centre of the nose; basically the high places of the face that the sun would naturally hit.
4. Lips
I recommend Jane Iredale Just kissed lip and cheek stain for great longevity, non-sticky formula and slight sheen like a gloss. It is so quick and easy! I find that my lips get the least attention in the summer so this is my go-to product. This product comes in three colours; Forever Pink, Forever Peach and Forever Red. I like mixing the pink and peach together.
The other option for a glowy lip is Milani Metallic Lip Creme in Chromatic Addict. This is a long wearing option. The metallic shimmer is lovely. The taste and smell is sweet but not overpowering. I have found them at Rexall Drug Stores for around $11.
5. Finishing/Setting
This isn’t really a fifth category but it is an important finish to lock in this wonderful look that you have completed so that it doesn’t go melting off your face. Skindinavia has an amazing setting spray. You may have heard of the Urban Decay cult following in this department. Interesting fact… Skindinavia actually makes the Urban Decay setting sprays…for about half the cost. They have a range of sprays for your skin type needs. This is a 16 hour hold my friends!
