Fall is a time of transition, new beginnings and schedules. It is also a great time to try out home decor projects. I love decor pieces that can be used year round and I think I have found just the project. A felt leaf garland is the most versatile piece of decor that I have found to date. It can be used as a table runner, chair decor, window or door frame dressing or a wreath. Felt is an ideal material as it is very flexible, requires little or no sewing, is inexpensive and easily moved.

I had eight sheets of olive green felt that I had wanted to use last year for the same project. So I quickly measured the door frame where I wanted it to hang from. I needed approximately ninety six inches to drape around the door frame. Each sheet of felt was twelve inches long and I had eight of them so I could make the base just the right length with what I had.
Supplies*
- Eight Sheets of Felt
- Cutting Mat
- Rotary Cutter
- Omni Grid (or Ruler)
- Glue Gun
- Scissors
- Sewing Machine (optional)

Instructions
- Cut 8 strips from one and a half of the felt sheets. The strips can be 1 1/2 to 2 inches wide. Using a rotary cutter and a cutting mat makes the process quicker and the cutting lines straighter. Making a cut against a the side of an Omni grid (clear ruler in various sizes often used for quilting makes it easy for cutting with a rotary cutter).
- Cut various sizes of leaves. Once I found a few sizes that I liked I would use them for a pattern to cut more from. I cut around 90 leaves.
- I used a sewing machine to stitch the strips for the base together. It would be easy to use hot glue as well. I felt that sewing would be stronger.
- Using the glue gun, I place a dab of glue at the base of the leaf then pinched it together to get a 3D effect. Once I did that with all the leaves, I glued one side of the leaf to the long base. To give a fuller effect to the felt leaf garland, I glued leaves on both sides of the felt base.

Door Frame
The door frame was the largest area that I wanted to hang the felt leaf garland from so I made sure to measure enough length to drape at the top. This door is a pocket door so it would not get caught like it would in a regular door. I also did not want to give it too much length so it could be snagged by someone walking by.

Window Dressing
I snagged this old barn window frame from my parents’ farm as a backdrop for this buffet table. The felt leaf garland makes the perfect addition to this vignette. For these easy DIY felt pumpkins, check out my Farmhouse Chic Centrepiece post.

As a creative, do you struggle with confidence?
Even though I share a lot of freebies and tutorials, I held back for years sharing my creations because I feared failure. As creatives, you and I can be held back due to negative thinking. It might look like comparing your ability to others or not having the confidence to pursue your creative talent or putting your creations out into the world.
Is that you? Have you ever found it difficult to cope with imposter syndrome, your inner critic, fear of failure, perfectionistic tendencies, and being hesitant to share your work?
If your answer is yes, I have a Free resource for you. It’s just a click away!

Mirror Swag
Place the felt leaf garland on an entry way mirror which adds warmth and interest to an otherwise plain mirror. The mirror has a wide top edge, so it stayed where it was placed.

Chair Adornment
Don’t you think these felt leaf garland look so elegant on the rest of my chairs?

Table Runner
Put together some items that you already have at home. This option below involved a huge bag of apples from a neighbour, two pumpkins painted coral and three roadside stops (in the rain and snow) for barley and goldenrod.

Use what you have on hand such as milk glass, silver tray, galvanized jars and lanterns for decor as they are great neutral pieces. The green in the apples marries perfectly with the olive green in the felt leaf garland. It was a win win!

Really loving your fall palette – not the traditional oranges and reds but a twist on these colors. Great job and fantastic pictures!
Thanks so much Marlies! Yes, the palette ended up totally different than my usual fall colours but I was happy with it.
Where did you get the sage green felt? I can never find any green other than like and hunter
Hi Haley,
Thanks for stopping by. I bought this at Fabricland (in Canada). I hear you about the lack of green options.
How big are your biggest leaves? I was thinking maybe 4” or close?
Hi Gina,
Thanks for stopping by! Yes, I would say around that. Let me know how it goes.
Good luck!
