There’s a chill in the air…and yes, you can warm up with the kind of wine you put in a glass but why not try infusing wine shades into your makeup routine. This Fall in love with wine tutorial will walk you through the best wine makeup trends in eye shadows and lip products affordable price points.
Red Carpet Trends
Burgundy or wine shades have already been making their rounds already in the celebrity awards show red carpets. My faves were Priyanka Chopra (Emmys) wearing a smoky plum eye and a wine shade as well on her lips. Lily Collins also wore this eye/lip duo at the Critics Choice Awards. And Olivia Culpo’s bronzed version of a burgundy eye was also a hit. Even bridal makeup for the fall is adopting this richness for eyes or lips (see below picture for a recent bridal trial I did).
It’s really as simple as changing up two steps in your morning routine instead of adding two more steps. And I am going to share with you my favorite, affordable lip and eye products to achieve an easy, fool proof fall look that will elevate your routine from drab to fab.
Let’s Fall in Love With Wine
There are many descriptions for this color; wine, burgundy, oxblood, merlot, cranberry, berry and even the lighter cousin, mauve. This is a shade that anyone can wear on the lips or eyes. It’s all about thinking about cool versus warm undertones and intensity of color. If you tend to have fair or light skin tones, opt for more of the cool undertones, and if you have more olive or deeper skin tone, then try the warmer undertones (think more of orange infused or gold infused wine colors). But at the end of the day, there are really no rules, if you like it then wear it.
EYES
You can use the creamy eye shadows all over the lid and up in to crease (after lid primer but before powder eyeshadow) but the easiest way to put on a deeper burgundy like the Colourpop one above is after your regular (brown or plum) lid shade and crease shade are on just put a dab of it in your outer crease with your finger.
The powder eye shadows that I have chosen here are best applied with a tapered crease brush in the outer v or outer part of the crease and blended out.
LIPS
Lips are the most fun and versatile of makeup products. And it’s the one makeup product you can change throughout the day. There are so many lip products out there and it can be daunting to try to find what works the best for you. I will break it down into three categories so you can easily choose what product will work the best for you.
1. Time – the more time you want to spend on your lips the more detailed the product can be. If you want a product that requires a lot of accuracy to apply then you’ll want a lip pencil or a liquid lippie. If you’re a 5 minute face gal, you’ll want to go with a tinted balm or a gloss.
2. Finish – do you like matte, glossy or balm like (the older we get the less matte we should be wearing – just sayin’)
3. Longevity – are you ok with touching up throughout the day or do you want a lip shade to last all day? Liquid lipsticks require few if any touch ups.
Here are my fave Fall in Love With Wine shades clockwise from the top right (all of these products minus the Jane Iredale one are under $10):
1. Burt’s Bees in Juniper Water – this is a clean line (no parabens, added fragrances or chemicals) and is a more opaque lipstick. I would classify this one as a middle of the road for commitment.
2. Essence Matt Matt Matt Longlasting Lipgloss in Girl of Today. This is a middle of the road commitment liquid lipstick as it is long lasting and very pigmented. It is more on the mauve side so it is less intense of a berry than the rest. This lipgloss tastes great sweet smell and taste. It does dry down to a matte finish but stays soft. It does wear off after eating so it would have to be reapplied. And the applicator would be the only draw back as it is small and does not hug the lip.
3. Tartiest Lip Paint in Fomo – This liquid lip is in the same category as the one above. The only difference is that that applicator is better and it has a more minty smell/taste.
4. Jane Iredale pure moisturizing lipstick in Annette – This lipstick is very opaque and matte. A high commitment lipstick is this one. It is slightly drying and the only lippie that I am showing that is on the expensive side. As a result of containing blackberry and pomegranate, it tastes great.
5. Milani moisturizing lipstick in Cabaret Red – Very creamy and long lasting but easy to apply. It has more cool undertones. This is a middle to higher commitment lipstick due to the intensity and longevity of the colour although it is easy to apply.
6. Revlon lipstick in Mauvy Night – This is a great moisturizing lipstick that is easy to apply and it is more of a neutral mauve (low commitment in the colour category).
7. Elf Moisturizing Lipstick in wine – Smooth and easy to apply. Cool undertone.
8. Milani moisturizing lipstick in Tuscan Toast – This is a creamy and long lasting lipstick with a warmer undertone to it. Middle to higher commitment.

9. Elf Gotta Glow Lip Tint in Perfect Berry – super low commitment with this gel like lipstick which reacts to your own chemistry to deliver a personalized shade of berry.
10. Wet n Wild Perfect Pout Gel Lip Liner in Gone Burgundy – This liner is great alone all over the lips and has a warm undertone. It is super easy to apply and matte and long lasting so I would say it is middle commitment.
11. Wet n Wild Megalast Liquid Catsuit Matte Lipstick in Rebel Rose (pictured) and Berry Recognize (not pictured as I have yet to find it available in store as it is always the sold out colour)- These are by far my favorite liquid lipsticks at only $5!!! They dry down matte and stay on the longest of all the liquid lipsticks I am reviewing (even after eating). High commitment due to the longevity and the precision needed to apply although the applicator is great. Apply two coats (wait until the first one dries) to get the best opacity. No smell or taste and very opaque. Rebel Rose is a cool mauve.
12. NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Copenhagen – This product is my favorite overall as it is a hybrid of all the products. It is creamy and soft and buildable from a stain like finish to a full matte liquid lipstick. This lipstick has a cool undertone to it. All the NYX Soft Matte lip creams are named after cities. It’s a middle commitment product as you can dab it on lightly with your finger but then build it, so it becomes really user friendly.
13. Wet n Wild Megalast Liquid Catsuit Matte Lipstick in Give me Mocha – see #11 for details. This particular colour is warm in undertone.
Favorite Fall in Love With Wine Shades
Because liquid lipsticks are matt and intense, I prefer to wear the lighter more mauve shades. And here are my two favorite liquid lipsticks; Tartiest Lip Paint in Fomo and Essence Matt Matt Matt Longlasting Lipgloss in Girl of Today. In the picture below, I am wearing Girl of Today.
