Sometimes you need to add a personal touch to a wall display. You want to put your own signature on it but you’re not sure what it is. Well, think of your favorite word or saying that would tie all of your favorite pieces together. It could be “joy”, “peace”, “blessed”, “but first tea”. You could even use a frame instead of a hoop for this project. So here is an easy Embroider with Love DIY craft for your to get creative with and put your own signature on a picture wall display.
A Fond Heritage
I’ve always loved embroidery from as far back as I can remember. I would embroider pot holders and pillow cases for my mother and grandmother. Some of these treasures were gifted back to me after my grandmother passed away. They are a reminder of her and my love to create as well. I made the cross stitch in the first picture, for my grandma when I was about ten. The second picture is how I tied it all together in a gallery wall display above my china cabinet. I love the picture of my grandma on her wedding day with her flower girls right before she got married.
I have been finding embroidery hoops at the local thrift stores and my small collection is growing. They are now being made in lovely plastic colors not just the plain wood as well.
So, I thought that it would be fitting to combine my love for hand lettering with my love for embroidery with this DIY craft.
Supplies
- embroidery hoop or frame of desired size
- embroidery floss (pull out about a metre and separate the six strands in half and just use three strands when embroidering a project like this one)
- needle
- cotton fabric
- scissors
- paper
- marker or brush pen for writing out word or phrase (You could find your favorite font and print off your word or saying if you don’t want to hand letter it yourself)
Let’s Get Started
1. Hand Letter Your Word
I traced the inside of the embroidery hoop inner circle on paper as I wanted the word to fill up the area and go right to the edges. Then I hand lettered the word “love” on a piece of paper using my Tombow pen.
2. Tracing
I then took the white cotton fabric and laid it out over the hand lettered piece of paper. I used a fabric pencil to trace out the hand lettering.
3. Cut Your Fabric
It was important that I had enough fabric to extend past the outside of the hoop so that I would be able to secure it at the back once I was done. Then I cut a square of the white cotton out. I used a slightly larger hoop to do the embroidery in because it would have been hard to extend the stitching right to the ends while working in the smaller hoop.
4. Stitching
I used the satin embroidery stitch and the stem stitch. The satin stitch was used for the thicker part of the letter (the hand lettered downstroke) and the stem stitch was used on the skinny part of the letter (hand lettered upstroke). The satin stitch basics can be found at Sublime Stitching with Jenny Hart here. Craftsy has a great easy tutorial on how to do the stem stich here.
I chose pink (surprise, surprise) embroidery thread/cotton, to contrast the blue hoop.

5. Finishing
Then I ran a stitch an inch from the hoop on the backside to tie the loose cotton fabric together. Tying the two ends together finishes the backside. I cut off the excess fabric so it would lay flat when it hangs against the wall.
“Embroider with love” was a very quick and enjoyable DIY craft project that turned out beautifully. This small hoop would look lovely in any display of three or more pictures or wall hangings. It fits in a young girl’s room with these pieces. Try your piece in more than one area of your display of pictures with some sticky tack first until it looks just right. Then you can put a nail or pin into the wall to hang it more permanently. It would be a lovely feminine touch as office decor, in a bedroom or powder room.
