When my children wanted to make gingerbread houses this year, I knew I wanted to make my own. We grabbed a kit with four different houses in it and set aside a night where all of us could make our own together. I have always admired the gingerbread houses and cookies that are decorated with just white icing. So I am happy to report I am pleased with the results of this quaint and easy gingerbread house.

My intention was to do a whole village with deer and some birds but I really didn’t want to stress out this year. I didn’t have a specific plan, I just went for it.

Here are some tips that made this easy gingerbread house scene a cinch.
- Buy a pre-made kit – it’s quick and easy without all of the baking fuss.
- Grate the edges of each rough piece before gluing together.
- Use hot glue instead of icing sugar to adhere the base, walls and roof. (I am not eating it anyway) This was the best tip ever (sorry, I can’t remember where I got it).
- Let the icing settle for about 15 minutes before moving it around (I did this with the roof to get the “mounds of snow” look)
- Use a movable base like a cake stand so it is easy to turn and move.

Tips and Tricks
I used crystallized sugar from a bulk store as ice in addition to making the snow sparkle. I like how the glass cake tray looks like an ice rink. Mounds of snow look as if they were falling from the roof and some of the bottle brush trees.

The icicles took some finesse but they were fun to do. I let some of the icing drip out of the icing bag then pulled it from the bag and adhered it to the edges of the house. This cute, easy gingerbread house DIY looks great from any angle.

Hot glue was also used to adhere the bottle brush trees to the cake tray base. I love how sparkly and snowy these little trees are.
