With Easter just barely behind us, I have all things new and fresh on the brain. Green grass, birds chirping, flowers peaking up. Maybe it’s because spring in the air but I have been in the creative DIY craft mood this morning. What inspires you? Sometimes it starts with something as simple as a trip to the dollarstore to get the creative juices going. Well, on my last trip I picked up some chalk paint by Americana Decor. Join me as I create this 2 step DIY chalkboard sign which is practical, fun, multi-functional and pretty.
Do you have a blank spot that you would like to fill with a home decor piece but don’t want the commitment of drilling holes in your wall or tile? There is this place above our stove that is just such a spot.
I liked the idea of having a silver tray mounted on the tile that would act as a message board as well. I had a silver tray that I only bring out at birthdays to hold dainties or cookies.
Step 1
Now that I purchased the chalk paint, I was ready to get to painting this diy chalkboard sign. There is no sanding or special technique required, just brush that paint on and voila! The chalkboard sign took three coats of the paint. The drying time between each coat was about thirty minutes.
Step 2
I added a coat of wax (the kind used after chalk paint is set usually on wood pieces) and let it dry so that the paint would not come off when washed. The chalk is easier to clean off when wax has been applied to the surface.

I found that regular chalk washes off better than the chalk crayon type.
Because the tray is magnetic, it is great to hold a recipe! These magnets are so whimsical and pretty. Nests, eggs, wings, bicycles and fun sayings make them the perfect springtime addition to this “Hatching” project.
Take your finished chalkboard sign and adhere it to the tile back splash with sticky tack as it is very lightweight. Also, for each season or occasion you can customize it with a hand lettered message.
