Discovering your why for your business is key prior to any strategic plan, marketing strategy or online social media presence. In this post I will outline four different reasons why you need to nail down your business’ why.
This seems like a no brainer, right? You wouldn’t believe how many people don’t know this or simplify it to “I just want to make money”. Unfortunately, that is not enough. Knowing your why keeps you: grounded to your values, motivated to keep going, focusing on the end goal and (most importantly) connected to your audience.
Discovering Where Your Why Comes From
Values are the foundation of what you do and who you are. They also form the “why” – why you do what you do. So ask yourself, “what are my core values and how do they apply to my business or the business I am planning to launch? The following checklist contains many values that you can explore, tick off and refer to when you need to remind yourself why you started the business you did.

I will give you an example from my business. So, my top four core values would be Beauty, Generosity, Kindness, Service. Everything that I put into my business has to have one or more of these core values backing it. If what you are doing cannot be backed by any of your values, then you need to consider why you are doing it.
You can grab this checklist in the Creative Clarity Workbook – just
fill out the the form below.
1. Your Why Determines the Business You Create
If you are at the beginning stages of building your business, this is a great question to ask. But if you have already created your business, you can still ask yourself these questions and make necessary changes.
At the end of the day, you need to make money with your business or it is just a hobby. But remember, making money cannot be your main goal; it has to be bigger than that.
Does your business fit into either of these main categories?
- Service
- Sales
2. Your Why Determines Who You Serve
When you think of the purpose of your business, you always need to ask “who am I serving?” This quickly leads to the next question, “what is the problem that I am solving?” Often you are serving a niche that has experienced what you have and you now are at the place of finding a solution.
Our discovery of who we are going to serve comes not only from our values but also from our personality and our gifting. Is this business something that you are willing to invest your time and money in long term? Is this something you cannot wait to get to in the morning? In other words, is it a passion of yours? Because if you just have money as your end goal, you will fizzle out and stop doing what you are doing.
My discovery of who I wanted to serve with my Coaching business came from my career as a Counsellor. I found that my favorite demographic was middle aged women. I loved the short term brief treatment modality and I loved working with goal attainment. It gave me much joy to witness change and partner with my clients. My own journey of “Discovering Your Why For Your Business” also came from my own journey of building my online art shop and my Coaching business.

3. Your Why Determines the Pain Point You Are Addressing
Once you know your passion, and target audience (or niche) begin by narrowing down what their pain point is or in other words, what problem are you trying to solve? Maybe it is a problem that you yourself have experienced and now want to teach your success to others.
Ask yourself how their life would be better with your product or service? Describe their life after experiencing or purchasing your products or services. Are you giving a new mom her own creative outlet by sharing a painting class or course? Are you giving Canva templates (to use for Social Media platforms) to course creators that do not have time in their schedule to create their own?
So in the example of the new mom, her pain point is fear of losing herself and her creativity. You would be giving her time and freedom to express herself.
And with the course creator, her pain point is lack of time to create great templates to attract customers. You would be giving her freedom to use her time with other parts of her business.
Do you see a common thread here? It has to do with freedom. Freedom to have more time, more money, more resources etc.. Do you see how discovering your why for your business impacts you and those you serve?
4. Your Why is the Glue That Holds Your Business Together
There is a progression of discovering your why for your business. Each point builds on the last. Your journey starts with core values, moves into what kind of offering you are giving, who you serve and what problem you are solving. Without this “glue” your business may become simply a “to do” list with no purpose.
Every time you take on a new task or project, ask yourself if it serves your why. If it does not relate to why you are doing what you are doing, then your ideas or business won’t last.
In conclusion, I hope you are asking these critical questions to discovering your why for your business. This process will save you much frustration and discouragement. It will help you stay focused and on track towards your dream goal or launching your business.
