The development of a vision board is a tool to assist you towards accomplishing your goal. It is a collection of mini stories that make up the story of your dream goal. Each component is a motivation, a nudge, and a representation of you tangibly holding your dream out in front of you. This collage represents your heart on display. It is likened to an affirmation; positive, short present tense statements (snapshots) of what you are believing and becoming. It is the “now” introducing itself to the “future”. So join me as we create a vision board; a beautiful representation of the fruit that will become your creative goal.

1. What is Your Goal?
Before you start rummaging through your magazine collection, ask yourself, what is my goal? Be bold, be brave; this is your time to think big and be creative. Your vision board represents the ideas and visual images that you are working towards; each component represents what you want to achieve. This exercise eliminates the clutter and narrows your vision to what is truly vital and necessary to your goal.
I just completed a vision board for one component of my Big Dream Goal. As you may know, my big dream goal is to become a licensed Surface Pattern Design Artist. I have given myself the entire year to learn the process of what this involves. I am working on completing my first surface pattern collection. My vision board represents all the pieces of my botanical garden collection; Blooming & Becoming. It may just look like a collection of pretty magazine pictures, but each picture, scrap of fabric, doily and lace remnant represent a piece of my collection. It is only important to you what each piece collected represents.
2. Think Like a Brand
Even if your goal is personal and doesn’t involve eventual sales and or services for others, it is important to treat your process like a business, as if it were your job. This mentality helps you to stay focused and intentional about your goal. When building your vision board, you want to be consistent and cohesive. The more focused you are on your goal, the more you can sift out what fits for you and what does not. Always ask yourself, “will this action, statement or image representation lead me closer to my goal?”
You may or may not have started to build your brand. Your brand is your message to your audience about who you are; your why and why your audience needs you (your products, service or message) in their life. This is conveyed through colours, patterns, images, messages and the feeling that you want to leave with people when they see your brand.
3. Begin Collecting
Pinterest and social media are good starting places for honing down what you are drawn to and what you love. Collect images of people, places and things to inspire and draw you in. This could be a collection from quotes, authors, designers, architecture, art, home decor and so on.
Make sure to ask yourself why you chose what you did. Most times, we like an image or message because of the way it made us feel. I love images that are peaceful, soft in colouring, delicately floral and feminine. Messages that I collect are encouraging, inviting, kind and sacred.

4. Affirmations
Include what will inspire you toward your dream goal. This could be one word, a poem, a Scripture verse, or a quote from a favorite author. For some insight into developing your own affirmations refer to the post, How to Set Goals to Achieve Successful Outcomes. In addition, I have free affirmation cards in the Free Printables section.
Even though I share a lot of freebies, I held back for years in starting to paint because I feared failure. As creatives, you and I can be held back due to negative thinking. 5. Collect Images & Items
Take some uninterrupted time to play; to collect to your hearts desire, to don a child like attitude of freedom and fun for this process. Begin to cut from magazines what you love and are drawn to. Do this until you feel you are done or until you have enough images to fill your vision board. I often do not use all of the pictures I have collected, but more is better than not enough. Take some of your pictures from your phone or camera and print them off as well. Take a look through items in your home that speak to your goal as well.
I prefer to use a tack board so that I can move images around and start fresh with each goal. A large piece of poster paper works as well as long as you are displaying your work where you can see it every day.
Take time and care to display your items in a way that is pleasing to your eye. Don’t rush this process as it will tell you much about yourself and your response to this self care activity.

6. Set a Completion Date
Just as your goal is set for a date of accomplishment, so should your vision board. It is perfectly fine to have a new vision board for every goal accomplished. This way you can start fresh and be inspired to move on to the next goal with a renewed sense of purpose through tailoring the vision board process to your new and exciting goal.

Remember that your vision board is there to inspire and motivate you. It is also a great reminder of what you want to accomplish especially on days where you feel defeated and frustrated with your process. I hope you feel excited to start collecting and displaying your dream goal. As you create a vision board, you will be inspired and motivated to press on towards your goal.
