Do you have an empty wall space at home and want to fill it with all of your most cherished pictures and art prints but don’t want to commit to nailing a bunch of holes in the wall? And what if you want to change up this wall space area to match the changing seasons? The answer I have for you is the floating shelf. This piece of decor magic can be found at many home decor stores. Follow along to grab how you can gain 5 Tips to Style a Floating Shelf!
1. Theme & Color Scheme
What room are you styling and what is your style? My style for this office decor floating shelf is modern romantic which is chic, pretty and classic. Even though the theme stays the same, you can change up a few pieces to suit the changing seasons. Because the room I am styling the shelf in has a pale Tiffany blue wall color, I like to play off of the color with a coordinating color, such as pink and then use accents of gold (rose and yellow) and black. Of course the Tiffany blue wall marries well with the Audrey Hepburn “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” framed picture.
2. Gather Inspiration
Gather together the pieces of art prints, decor items and memorabilia that you love and want to display. You might want to shop the different rooms in your home If you have a few pieces and want to add more to your collection. Don’t forget to peruse magazines, Pinterest or websites that have the style you like.
3. Texture & Color
You want to make sure you are using a mix of metals, naturals, pops of color. I like to mix opposing moods as well. Light and airy might be crystal or flowers and heavy and moody might be black and ornate. Regardless of your theme, black is always a good option to use when styling a collection. It anchors your eye and doesn’t leave your gaze wandering all over the space.

4. Size & Proportion
In your search throughout your home, find objects of different heights. Keep in mind the depth of the floating shelf when choosing your items. I am not a fan of symmetry in this case. I rather like the look of a larger photo off to one side but not right to the edge of the shelf. Put your favorite piece where you want to draw your eye to; close to the middle but a little off set.
Also, if you are wanting to hang more than one floating shelf there are a couple things to keep in mind. If the shelves are the same length and you have more than two, line them up one above the other. I personally wouldn’t hang two in line with each other. Remember the eye likes odd numbers. If the shelves are different lengths, off set one rather than centering them over top of each other.
The height of the shelf also depends on where your eye level will be in the room. Will you be sitting or standing in the area around the shelf? I hung my shelf between eye level of sitting and standing as I do more sitting than standing in this office space.

5. Snap it
Take pictures of your objects in different positions in different groupings. Take a step back and look at the room from different angles and at different times of day until you like what you see on camera. Also, use all of the above “rules” to style adjacent furniture such as desks, dressers, or chairs. I use groupings to coordinate an entire room. One grouping above is the desk, chair, rug and cork board and the smaller grouping that ties this side of the room together is the floating shelf, Eiffel Tower Wall decal and/or the chair. As the chair has more than one function, it can be utilized in either groupings.
