Sometimes we live in a season of waiting and the waiting can feel like forever. Once we have reached and completed our deadline, we are able to look back and tell ourselves that the waiting wasn’t that long. But while we wait, without an endpoint, we are stretched and our patience is continuously tested. So my friend, follow along with this post that will outline 4 productive things to do while you’re waiting on your breakthrough.
Do you ever feel like one moment you are on the threshold of a great breakthrough, and then the next moment you are discouraged and wonder if your dream could really be a reality? Well, let me encourage you and tell you that you are not alone and to not give up. The number one thing that I hear from other creatives who are thriving is, “show up, be consistent and keep doing what you are doing.”

The following four points are reminders that can help develop habits that in turn create consistency and become life long patterns towards goal success.
1. Let Go of the Control
So much of our negative energy goes into worrying about what we cannot control and this turns into complaining. So stop and ask yourself, “what is in my control?” External circumstances as well as others’ actions, thoughts and feelings are examples of what is out of our control. As soon as you find your mind wandering to that critical place, stop and refocus on what is in your control. Write it down and make a plan. How does this area that you have control over fit into your daily or weekly tasks? Is it part of your overall goal? You have the choice to change your thinking.
2. Become an Observer
“Suspend judgement and remain curious” has been a motto of mine for years. When I work with clients in my counselling practice, part of my job is to observe the person’s choices and respond back with what I see, without judgment or advice. The less judgment, the more grace and the more grace the more freedom to observe yourself as a success. Become an avid observer of what is working within your goal setting plans and also what has worked for others. Ask others who know you what they see when they observe your plan and goal focus.

3. Prioritizing
What is important right now, today? What can wait and what do you need to spend less time on in order to be more productive? Are there some unhealthy habits that sidetrack you from your task list? Create your to do list the day before, at the end of the day, that way you are not distracted with all of the other have-to’s that encroach into your mornings on a daily basis. Break up your daily tasks into bite sized manageable time slots. That way if you are interrupted or side tracked, getting back to finishing the task will be attainable.
Once you begin this regular practice, look back at your day and ask yourself if you took on too many tasks or whether they were too long of a task. This “looking back” helps create and build the practice of measuring the successful steps that you take towards your overall goal.
4. Enjoy the Season
When we spend all of our time waiting for our breakthrough, our dream to become reality, our hobby to turn into employment, our efforts into gain, we miss out on the enjoyment of the process. Winter is the perfect reminder that we are in a season of rest. Allowing yourself to rest means that you are slowing down while savoring the pace. Patience is a great teacher. We learn to appreciate what we have to work for and wait for. Take some time to write out what patience has taught you in this season of rest.

As you patiently wait for your spring, allow yourself to explore these 4 productive things to do while you’re waiting on your breakthrough with the knowledge that you can trust the wait and embrace the unknown. I love the verse that reminds me that God’s plan is higher than mine and there is a reason I am not allowed to see all that is to come. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight”. Proverbs 3:5,6
